Greek Super League powerhouse Olympiakos has officially announced the signing of Super Eagles-eligible central defender Nelson Abbey from English club Reading, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The 20-year-old defender has bid farewell to Reading after completing a permanent move to Olympiakos.
The financial details of the transfer and the length of Abbey’s contract with Olympiakos remain undisclosed as the club opted not to disclose such information in their official statement. According to Transfermarkt the player’s current market value estimates at €400,000.
The young talent, who made his professional debut for Reading at the age of seventeen, expressed a preference for joining one of the traditional European clubs, ultimately choosing Olympiakos.
Having played in thirty-one matches across all competitions for Reading, Abbey showcased his defensive prowess and leadership skills by captaining the team on several occasions despite his young age. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in his career with the Royals.
Abbey, an English-born central defender, has also represented England at the U17 level and featured in three games for the England Men’s Elite League squad this season. His experience and versatility make him a valuable addition to Olympiakos’ defensive lineup.
As of now, Olympiakos stands in fourth place in the Greek Super League table, accumulating 38 points after nineteen matches. They trail league leaders PAOK by six points and will be looking to bolster their position with the addition of Abbey to their squad.
