Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers finds himself at a crossroads as the January transfer window unfolds. Despite netting a hat-trick in Rangers’ recent 5-0 Scottish Cup victory over Fraserburgh, the 30-year-old Nigerian international’s position at the club remains uncertain, as per The Scottish Sun.
Dessers began the season as Rangers’ first-choice striker but has since seen his playing time reduced, with Hamza Igamane and Danilo moving ahead in the pecking order. This shift has led to speculation about his potential departure. Dessers himself acknowledged the situation, stating.
“I don’t know what my situation is now. I can imagine that Rangers might want to earn something from me this month.”
Several clubs have expressed interest in acquiring Dessers. French side Saint-Etienne was among the first linked, followed by Italian Serie A teams Cagliari and Empoli. More recently, La Liga club Leganes inquired about the striker. According to Transfermarkt, the player’s current value is estimated at €4 million.
However, reports indicate that Leganes find Dessers’ current valuation unaffordable and are exploring alternative options, including a potential loan deal, which appears unlikely given Rangers’ stance.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has addressed the speculation, emphasizing the need for a suitable replacement should Dessers depart. He remarked, “If Cyriel goes, you need to replace him. And it needs to be at least the same quality.” Clement also highlighted the importance of maintaining team harmony, noting that an unhappy player could negatively impact the club.
As the transfer window progresses, Dessers’ future at Rangers remains in flux. The coming weeks will be pivotal in determining whether he continues his tenure at Ibrox or embarks on a new chapter in his professional career.
