Seven-time Turkish champions Trabzonspor have made their approach to Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, currently contracted to Southampton, over a possible move in the coming transfer window, as per Africa Foot.
The Turkish club is keen on securing the striker permanently on a three-year contract, after his successful loan spell last season. Onuachu scored 17 goals and provided four assists during his initial spell there, and they have made him their top summer target.
A source at his representing agency, CMG Sports, has revealed that the Turkish giants intend to complete the deal before the end of the current season. They are however set to face hurdles in negotiations with Southampton, who have slapped a €10 million price tag on the 30-year-old, whose contract expires in June 2026. Previously, Southampton rejected a €7 million offer from Trabzonspor.
“Trabzonspor have made him (Onuachu) their priority signing for the summer, and the talks are on, with both the player and Southampton. They wanted him last summer permanently, but their €7 million didn’t match the €10 million asking price. They are now determined to complete the deal before the end of the season,” the source told The Nerve Africa in an exclusive interview.
Paul Onuachu: What’s Next?
This comes at a time when Southampton suspended talks with the striker for a new contract. The club decided against renewing contracts and signing new players until they bring in a new coach, ahead of their return to the English Championship.
It should be recalled that Onuachu joined the Saints in 2023 from Belgian side Genk on a three-year contract. He has since played 37 matches, including 25 this season, scoring four goals with one assist.
At Genk, the Nigerian, whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €8 million, played 135 games and scored 85 goals and assisted eight times for Genk in Belgium.
