Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi appears set to leave West Bromwich Albion at the end of the 2024/25 season, with multiple clubs already expressing interest in a summer move. According to exclusive sources at Kick Off Nigeria, West Brom are preparing to offload the experienced centre-back as part of a planned squad overhaul.
West Brom Not Planning to Renew Ajayi’s Contract
Ajayi’s current contract with the Championship side expires this summer, and the club has reportedly decided against offering a renewal. The 31-year-old is one of several players expected to leave as the Baggies consider a rebuild ahead of the new campaign.
Ajayi joined West Brom from Rotherham United in 2019 and has since become a regular figure in their backline. However, he now looks set to move on after six seasons at The Hawthorns.
Reading and Hull City Show Interest
With his future up in the air, Championship outfit Hull City and League One side Reading have already made formal contact with Ajayi regarding a potential transfer. This was confirmed by Larry Oban, a key figure at Wasserman, the agency representing Ajayi.
“Ajayi will certainly walk away from West Brom, as they’ve not shown serious intent to renew his contract,” Oban told Kick Off Nigeria. “He’s happy at the club, but he will leave if no offer is made. He’s already in talks with Reading and Hull, who admire his versatility and experience. There will be further evaluation in the coming weeks, but he’ll definitely be somewhere next season.”
Injury-Plagued Season for the Nigerian International
The 2024/25 campaign has been frustrating for Ajayi, with injuries limiting him to just 14 appearances across all competitions. Despite the setbacks, his overall contribution since joining the Baggies has been significant—175 appearances in total during his six-year stay.
Ajayi’s experience and leadership continue to make him an attractive option for clubs seeking defensive reinforcements.
Career Snapshot: From Charlton to the Super Eagles
Ajayi began his career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Arsenal, and later played for Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra, and AFC Wimbledon. On the international stage, he has earned 39 caps for the Nigerian national team (Super Eagles), cementing his status as a reliable option at the back.
