The English-born Nigerian Eberechi Eze became Tottenham’s transfer target after Spurs’ attacking midfielder James Maddison suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will keep him out for most of the season, SkySports confirms.
The north Londoners have a long-standing interest in the 27-year-old player, and now Tottenham is expected to proceed with the negotiations as the new English Premier league season in about to start.
According to The Guardian, Eberechi Eze’s contract with Crystal Palace includes £68m release clause, that expires on Friday. Tottenham have opened talks over a potential move but unwilling to meet the clause.
Once Eze’s clause expires, The Eagles are expected to demand a similar fee that would include a significant payment up front in order for club to find a replacement before transfer deadline.
It is believed that the Spurs are trying to beat Arsenal to the attacking midfielder as the Gunners have previously indicted they are in pursuit of the England international.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports that Eze is keen on Tottenham move as Palace are informed of his desire to play Champions League football. Deal now depends on club to club talks and Spurs are seriously working on it.
In 2020 Eze joined Palace from QPR for an initial €17.80 million fee, according to Transfermarkt, and has improved his goal and assists output in each of the past three seasons. Last year he registered 14 goals and 11 assists in 43 games across all domestic competitions.
