Werder Bremen have decided that Nigeria striker Victor Boniface will not play for the club again this season, following a fitness-plagued loan move from Bayer Leverkusen.
The 25-year-old’s time at the Weserstadion is set to be terminated early after he was sidelined with a knee injury that requires a specialist’s assessment.
Bremen’s Head of Professional Football, Peter Niemeyer, confirmed the news following the club’s first training session of 2026.
“The 25-year-old is suffering from a knee injury that prevents him from participating in team training,” Niemeyer told DeichStube.
Difficult chapter
Boniface arrived at Bremen in the summer after a potential move to AC Milan collapsed due to concerns over his medical history.
Having been a talisman for Bayer Leverkusen during their Bundesliga-winning campaign—where he registered 32 goals and 12 assists in 61 games—much was expected of the Super Eagle.
However, his impact in Bremen has been minimal:
- Delayed start: He did not earn his first start for the club until November.
- Limited minutes: He spent the majority of the first half of the season as an unused substitute.
- Injury blow: A knee injury in early December effectively ended his participation for the calendar year.

What happens next
The striker now faces a choice between undergoing immediate surgery or attempting to manage the injury, though the former would likely rule him out until next season.
Regardless of his medical decision, Bremen have reportedly moved to cancel the loan agreement with Leverkusen, signaling a premature end to a move that never quite caught fire.
