In an effort to revamp the team dynamics after an underwhelming season, the Dutch giants club Ajax are reportedly on the verge of a massive roster overhaul that might see several players, including Super Eagles-eligible Chuba Akpom, exit the club, according to Soccernet.NG.
Akpom, who joined Ajax from Middlesbrough last summer for a transfer fee of €12.3 million, has had a challenging time making a significant impact at the club. Despite a remarkable prior season with 28 goals and two assists in 38 Championship games, the 28-year-old forward’s transition to Ajax has not met expectations.
With ten goals in 23 appearances for the Godenzonen, Akpom’s limited playtime and mostly substitute appearances have not aligned with Ajax’s ambitions, leading to speculation about his future at the club.
Amid Ajax’s struggle to regain form over the last two seasons and with many of last summer’s 14 new signings failing to deliver, the club is believed to be considering a sell-off of underperforming assets, including Akpom.
Should Ajax release Akpom, the forward is likely to draw interest from English clubs. After his stint in top-flight football, a move to the Premier League could be attractive for him.
According to Transfermarkt the striker’s current value estimates at €12 million. Considering his modest output this season, Ajax might set his price below the €10 million mark, positioning him as a potentially shrewd acquisition for clubs looking to bolster their attacking options.
