Romanian top-tier club CFR Cluj have concluded an agreement to sign Nigerian international Kenneth Omeruo on a two-year contract, as per Footy-Africa.
After over a week of behind-the-scenes interest, formal negotiations were initiated on Thursday. While the experienced centre-back had hoped for a three-year commitment, both parties eventually settled on a two-year deal after lengthy talks.
The 31-year-old was keen to return to top-level football, with CFR Cluj’s guaranteed place in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa Conference League proving to be a major attraction.
A representative from ISC, the agency managing Omeruo’s career, revealed to Footy-Africa that the deal is effectively sealed.
“It all came together quite quickly despite the tight timeline. The player preferred a longer contract for added security, but a two-year agreement was ultimately accepted. Now, it’s just a matter of when the official unveiling happens.”
Omeruo has been a free agent since parting ways with Turkish side Kasımpasa six months ago, where he made five appearances. With a current market valuation of €1.20 million on Transfermarkt, he remains a highly regarded figure in African football.
Over the course of his career, Omeruo has featured for clubs across Europe, including Chelsea U21 and Middlesbrough in England, ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands, Leganés in Spain, and multiple stints in Turkey with Alanyaspor and Kasımpasa.
On the international stage, he is among Nigeria’s most capped active players with 69 appearances. He made his debut at 19 and was part of the Super Eagles side that lifted the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Omeruo has also represented Nigeria at the FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup, and was most recently included in the squad that finished runners-up at the 2023 AFCON.
CFR Cluj will be hoping Omeruo’s wealth of experience and leadership at the back can help drive their ambitions both domestically and in Europe.
