The Colorado Rapids have officially announced the signing of the Nigerian centre-back Chidozie Awaziem, as per the club’s official website.
The deal, announced on 10 December 2024, involves an initial payment of $1 million (approximately €950,000) in General Allocation Money (GAM), with an additional $200,000 (around €190,000) in conditional GAM based on performance metrics.
Awaziem, 27, joined FC Cincinnati mid-season from Portuguese side Boavista FC, making 14 appearances across all competitions and contributing three assists. His European career includes stints at FC Porto and a loan spell at Hajduk Split, where he helped secure the Croatian Football Cup in 2023. Internationally, Awaziem has earned 33 caps for Nigeria, featuring in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Colorado Rapids’ President, Pádraig Smith, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting Awaziem’s leadership qualities and extensive experience in Europe and on the international stage. Awaziem is under contract through the 2025 season, with options extending to 2027.
This strategic move aims to strengthen the Rapids’ defensive line as they build upon a successful 2024 season. The club is optimistic that Awaziem’s addition will enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming campaign.
