Nigerian-Swedish forward Emmanuel Ekong has addressed speculation about a potential move to Swedish champions Malmö FF ahead of the January transfer window, as per Swedish media outlet Fotbolllskanalen.
Despite the rumors, Ekong emphasized his commitment to his current team, Italian Serie A club Empoli.
The 22-year-old is the son of former Super Eagles midfielder Prince Ikpe Ekong made his Serie A debut for Empoli in 2022, has faced challenges securing a regular spot in the first team, prompting loan spells at Perugia and Istra 1961 in Croatia.
Ekong’s time in Croatia proved fruitful, with the forward tallying three goals and three assists in 22 appearances. However, his return to Empoli has seen limited opportunities, with nine substitute appearances in the league this season totaling just 101 minutes.
Amid these struggles, Malmö FF has been linked as a potential destination for the forward. While Ekong expressed admiration for the Swedish club, he maintained his focus on Empoli.
“Malmö is a great team, and I have a lot of respect for them, but my focus is here at Empoli, where I have a contract,” Ekong stated. “I want to play and do well, but I take things day by day and aim to perform at the highest level possible.”
Under contract with Empoli until 2027, Ekong is determined to make an impact, targeting his first league goal for the club while prioritizing team success. Despite his limited role in the league, he recently found the net in the Italian Cup. According to Transfermarkt the player’s current value is estimated at €500,000.
As transfer rumors swirl, Ekong’s future remains uncertain, but his ambition to establish himself as a consistent performer is clear.
