Swiss Super League side FC Basel are reportedly in advanced negotiations to complete the permanent signing of Nigerian striker Philip Otele from UAE Pro League club Al Wahda, Kick Off Nigeria has learned.
The 26-year-old forward has impressed during his loan spell at FC Basel, scoring eight goals in 14 appearances, quickly becoming one of the club’s most consistent attacking threats this season.
According to sources close to the club, FC Basel are keen to make Otele’s stay permanent following the expiration of his current loan deal. The Nigerian striker’s form has reignited his reputation in Europe and attracted interest from several other clubs.
Otele initially rose to prominence in the Romanian top flight with CFR Cluj, where he finished the 2023/24 season as the league’s top scorer. His standout campaign earned him a move to Al Wahda, who beat out multiple European clubs to secure his signature.
However, his stint in the UAE Pro League proved challenging, with limited playing time and a goal drought hampering his impact. A mid-season loan switch to FC Basel has since revived his form, with the Nigerian striker now regarded as one of the most in-form players in the Swiss Super League.
As the summer transfer window approaches, FC Basel are looking to seal a permanent transfer for Otele, despite competition from top clubs across Europe and Scandinavia. The club is reportedly working to finalize the deal before rival suitors intensify their pursuit.
According to Transfermarkt, Otele’s recent performances have boosted his market value to €2 million, reflecting his resurgence and growing demand.
