Nigerian international Henry Onyekuru is on the verge of making a sensational return to the Turkish Süper Lig, with second-tier side Kocaelispor emerging as the surprise destination for the former Galatasaray star, as per Turkish media outlet Aksam.
The 28-year-old winger, who made headlines during his previous stints with Galatasaray, is reportedly set to leave Saudi club Al-Fayha and travel to Istanbul in the coming days to finalize talks with Kocaelispor.
Onyekuru to Exit Saudi Arabia
Onyekuru joined Al-Fayha in the summer of 2023 from Turkish club Adana Demirspor in a deal worth €3.2 million. Despite flashes of brilliance in Saudi Arabia, the Nigerian winger is now preparing to part ways with the club after just one season.
His name had recently been linked with Süper Lig giants Beşiktaş, and some outlets even claimed he had met with club president Serdal Adalı. However, those reports were quickly dismissed.
Kocaelispor in Advanced Talks
While the likes of Galatasaray and Beşiktaş have been previously associated with the player, it is newly promoted Süper Lig side Kocaelispor who are now leading the race for his signature. Onyekuru is expected to arrive in Istanbul shortly to hold direct negotiations with the club.
If finalised, the deal could be considered one of the most surprising transfers of the Turkish summer window, given the player’s top-flight pedigree and past contributions to Turkish football.
Al-Fayha Stats
During his time at Al-Fayha, Onyekuru featured in 38 official matches, accumulating 2,754 minutes of playing time. He scored 11 goals and provided 3 assists across all competitions.
A return to Turkey could reignite Onyekuru’s career, especially with a club like Kocaelispor eager to make a mark in their first season back in the Süper Lig.
