Former Nigerian winger George Finidi in an exclusive interview with Kick Off Nigeria has expressed discontent and disgust at the manner in which his compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho has been treated at Spanish La Liga side Sevilla FC, urging him to find the exit door.
The former Ajax, Real Betis, and Ipswich Town winger emphasized that the club, particularly the coaching staff and fans, have been unappreciative of the striker, whom they expected to become an instant hit after signing him as a free agent in the summer.
“I think they have disrespected him in all kinds of ways because they expected a lot when they signed him. But it’s still early days, and he hasn’t been given enough time,” Finidi told Kick Off Nigeria in an exclusive interview.
“I think he should leave the club if worthy suitors come knocking. He’s still 28 with a lot to offer in a place where he’ll be appreciated. I think a return to England would be the best direction, but he can also explore opportunities elsewhere in new environments,” added Finidi, who earned 62 caps for the Super Eagles.
Iheanacho has scored three goals in 11 appearances across all competitions. However, those goals have come in just two Copa del Rey matches. Ironically, these are the only matches in which he has been able to complete 90 minutes since joining the club.
“See, whenever he gets enough minutes, he has been able to deliver. I just don’t understand why he is never trusted enough in La Liga. I think he has been disrespected enough, and he should leave,” Finidi reiterated.
Sevilla manager Xavier García Pimienta has, on various occasions, made it clear that Iheanacho is not in his plans, and the player’s lack of form has raised questions about his suitability for the team. However, his situation is further complicated by his significant salary, reportedly over €2 million per season.
A number of English sides, including West Ham and Watford, have been reported as potential suitors for the Super Eagles forward. Other reports have linked him to a possible move to Greek giants Panathinaikos.
