Former Nigerian international Brian Idowu has expressed surprise over Kelechi Iheanacho‘s struggles at Sevilla but believes the Super Eagles forward has a prime opportunity to rejuvenate his career at Middlesbrough.
Iheanacho, who transferred from Leicester City to Sevilla last summer, faced challenges adapting to La Liga, leading to a mid-season loan move to English Championship side Middlesbrough. Reflecting on Iheanacho’s stint in Spain, Idowu exclusively told Kick Off Nigeria:
“Yes, I was surprised because Iheanacho is actually a classy player, but it seems he is better suited for English football than Spanish, and that’s probably the reason for his struggles.”
Iheanacho’s Transfer Value Drop
According to Transfermarkt, Iheanacho’s current market value stands at €5 million, a steep decline from his peak valuation of €20 million in 2018 during his time at Leicester City. His value has steadily dropped in recent years due to inconsistent performances and limited playing time. His move to Sevilla was expected to reignite his career, but his struggles in Spain only accelerated the decline.

A Chance for Redemption
Idowu believes that the switch to Middlesbrough presents Iheanacho with a golden opportunity to reset his career:
“Middlesbrough is a chance to restart, yes, because I think they will give him full trust there. And he has already shown his potential at Manchester City and Leicester.”
At 28, Iheanacho has already proven himself in English football, making a name for himself at Manchester City and later enjoying a strong spell at Leicester City. His return to England with Middlesbrough gives him a fresh chance to rediscover his form and play a key role in the club’s push for Premier League promotion.
