Barnsley Football Club has announced the signing of Nigerian international midfielder Kelechi Nwakali from Portuguese side G.D. Chaves via club’s official website.
The 26-year-old midfielder joins the English club on a three-year contract, pending visa and international clearance. The finacial details of the deal have undisclosed, but Transfermarkt estimates the player’s current value at €700,000.
Nwakali, who made 32 appearances in the Primeira Liga last season, started his professional career at Arsenal after impressing during the 2015 U-17 World Cup, where he won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
Following his time with Arsenal, he gained experience across Europe, including stints in Spain with Huesca, Alcorcón, and Ponferradina, before moving to Chaves in 2023.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Nwakali said:
“I am very happy to sign for Barnsley Football Club. After speaking with Mladen and Head Coach Darrell earlier this summer, I knew this was an exciting opportunity for me. I know I can bring a lot to the team and am looking forward to making Oakwell my home for the next three years.”
Nwakali, who has represented Nigeria at various youth levels and earned his first senior cap in 2022 during the African Cup of Nations, is set to begin his journey with Barnsley in the coming weeks.
