Ademola Lookman’s stunning second-half strike spared Nigeria’s blushes as the Super Eagles began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a nervy 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Fes.
Semi Ajayi had headed the three-time champions into a first-half lead, but Charles M’Mombwa’s equalizer shortly after the interval threatened an upset in the rain-slicked Fez Stadium.
However, Lookman—fresh from his 2024 African Player of the Year accolades—restored the lead just seconds later to ensure Eric Chelle’s side avoided a slip-up in their Group C opener.
Super Eagles frustrated by wastefulness
Nigeria, seeking redemption after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, dominated the early proceedings but were frequently thwarted by a combination of the woodwork and inspired goalkeeping from Tanzania’s Zuberi Masudi.
Sevilla striker Akor Adams saw a powerful near-post header rattle the crossbar, while Victor Osimhen—who endured a frustrating evening—had an angled effort cleared off the line after rounding the goalkeeper.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 36th minute when Alex Iwobi’s hanging cross found Ajayi, who rose highest to nod the ball into the far corner.

Tanzania’s brief hope
Tanzania, led by interim coach Miguel Gamondi, showed plenty of spirit despite their underdog status. Five minutes into the second half, they stunned the Nigerian contingent when Novatus Miroshi’s delicate chipped pass found M’Mombwa, who side-footed home to level the scores.
The joy of the Taifa Stars was short-lived. Almost immediately from the restart, Lookman took matters into his own hands, twisting past his marker on the edge of the area before unleashing a fierce left-footed drive into the top corner.

Late alarms
Despite the lead, Nigeria’s defensive frailties were exposed late on. Tanzania substitute Kelvin John was inches away from connecting with a cross that would have resulted in an empty-net tap-in, while Ibrahim Hamad fired wildly over from close range in the dying moments.
The Super Eagles held on to move to the top of Group C, but coach Eric Chelle will be aware that a more clinical edge will be required when they face heavyweights Tunisia on Saturday.
