Spokane Velocity FC’s newest signing, Onyebuchi Opara, has exclusively opened up to Kick Off Nigeria about the decisive phone call that convinced him to join the USL League One side.
The Nigerian defender, who arrives from Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC, shared details of the conversation that sealed his move.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything
Speaking exclusively with KickoffNigeria, Opara revealed how a direct call from Spokane Velocity FC head coach Leigh Veidman played a crucial role in his decision to sign.
“It’s a delight to join one of the best clubs in America, and I want to be part of their exciting project,” Opara said.
“After a conversation with Coach Leigh Veidman, it became an easy decision. He outlined the club’s vision for the new season, with promotion as the top priority. That ambition convinced me right away.”
Opara is also setting high personal goals for himself.
“Football in the USA is growing every day, and the organization here is top-notch. My individual target is clear—to help Spokane Velocity FC win the championship.”
Opara’s Journey Through Europe
Before moving to the U.S., the 25-year-old defender built an impressive career across Europe. His first professional contract took him to Latvia’s top division, where he made 47 appearances for FK Spartaks Jūrmala, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists.
His standout performances led to a half-season loan with Swiss Super League club FC Lugano, where he capped off his spell with a goal in his final match before returning in June 2021.
Just two weeks later, Opara secured another move—this time to Finland’s top-flight Veikkausliiga with AC Oulu. Playing as a left wing-back, he made an immediate impact, scoring five goals, including one in each of his first two games. In his final Finnish match, he delivered a crucial equalizer before halftime, helping ACO avoid relegation.
Why Spokane Velocity FC?
Following his successful stint in Finland, Opara signed with Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC, where he continued to develop as a key defensive player. Now, he’s ready for his next challenge with Spokane Velocity FC—a club with big ambitions and a clear path to success.
With his versatility, experience, and winning mentality, Opara could be a game-changer for Spokane Velocity FC in the upcoming season.
