Highly-rated Nigerian forward Tijjani Muhammad has revealed to Kick Off Nigeria, that visa-related issues prevented him from signing with Belgian club KRC Genk, ultimately leading to his move to Swedish side Hammarby Fotboll.
The Nigeria U-17 invitee has since become a standout performer in the Swedish league, solidifying his status as one of the top young strikers to watch.
Why the KRC Genk Deal Fell Through
In an exclusive interview with Kick Off Nigeria, Muhammad recounted the clubs that showed interest in signing him and how various setbacks led him to Sweden.
“From Maliantarki Football Club, after my time with the Nigeria U-17 team, I traveled to Russia to play for FDC Vista, combining football with education until I turned 18. While at Vista, I participated in the prestigious Danish Cup and finished as one of the top scorers. That’s where Danish Superliga club Vejle Boldklub became interested in me, but the deal never materialized. I never even asked my agent why it fell through.”
“After returning to Nigeria, I went to France for trials with Clermont Foot. I gave it my all, but the club hierarchy didn’t seem impressed, so I came back home. That same year, I had another trial with Swedish club Kalmar FF, alongside my friend Vince Osuji. When we returned, the club only offered a contract to Osuji, who later moved to Club Brugge.”
Muhammad then confirmed the failed KRC Genk transfer, revealing that visa issues stopped the move from happening.
“Amid all the ups and downs, my agent called to inform me about KRC Genk’s interest. There was no trial required, just a direct deal, but it never happened because I was only 17 at the time. I was denied a visa to travel for medicals and officially sign with the club. After my 18th birthday, Hammarby Fotboll was the only club ready with an offer, and that’s how I ended up joining them in 2024,” he concluded.
Tijjani Muhammad’s Future Prospects
Now making waves in Sweden, Muhammad is eager to continue his development at Hammarby, with hopes of securing a move to one of Europe’s top leagues in the near future.
