Rising Nigerian talent Gabriel Jesus David has turned down opportunities in Sweden and Norway, snubbing offers from Djurgårdens IF Fotboll and FK Bodø/Glimt to secure a move to Belgian Pro League side Royal Antwerp, as per Kick Off Nigeria information.
The 18-year-old striker, who was scouted in Nigeria and previously played for P Sports Football Academy, had been on trial with both Scandinavian clubs, impressing with his performances. His displays with Djurgårdens IF and Bodø/Glimt fueled speculation that he would begin his European career in either the Swedish Allsvenskan or the Norwegian Eliteserien.
However, despite his strong showings, David opted against signing for either Scandinavian club. The exact reasons behind the failed moves remain unclear, especially considering his standout performances during trials. Instead, he has now signed a loan deal with Royal Antwerp, with an option for a permanent transfer.
The promising Nigerian forward was discovered by football agent Paul Ojo Omamomo and facilitated in his move to Belgium by Nigerian-Norwegian super agent Atta Aneke, who has been instrumental in securing European opportunities for African talents.
David’s decision highlights the growing appeal of Belgium’s Pro League as a development hub for young African players, with clubs like Antwerp increasingly competing with Scandinavian teams for top prospects. His move makes him the second Nigerian player to join the club in the January transfer window, following 18-year-old midfielder Orseer Achihi, who signed a five-year contract with The Reds.
