Nigerian teenager Akpe Victory has emerged as one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe, with Rangers, Benfica, Basel and Strasbourg all tracking the Zalaegerszegi centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Soccernet.
The 19-year-old has attracted growing interest following an impressive debut campaign in Hungary, where his performances have reportedly prompted enquiries from clubs across Scotland, Portugal, Switzerland, France and beyond.
According to reports, Basel have already had two bids rejected, with Zalaegerszegi valuing the defender at around €5 million.
Victory’s rapid rise has been remarkable. Less than two years ago, he was playing academy football in Lagos before moving to Lithuania with FK Banga Gargždai. After impressing there, he secured a transfer to Hungary in January and quickly established himself in the first team.
Standing at 1.95m (6ft 5in), Victory combines physical strength with composure on the ball — qualities that have become increasingly valuable in modern central defenders. Scouts have also been impressed by his aerial ability, recovery pace and confidence in possession.
The defender made 18 appearances in all competitions last season, contributing a goal and an assist while helping solidify Zalaegerszegi’s back line.
Benfica’s interest is particularly noteworthy given the Portuguese club’s track record of developing young talent before selling players to Europe’s elite leagues. Rangers, meanwhile, are believed to view Victory as a long-term defensive investment as they look to strengthen their squad for future title challenges.
With multiple clubs monitoring his progress and the transfer window approaching, Victory appears set to become one of Nigeria’s most talked-about young exports this summer.
A move to a larger European club would represent another significant step in a career that has progressed at remarkable speed since leaving Nigeria for Europe in 2025.
